1585-1651 Flemish Cornelis de Vos Gallery Flemish portrait and figure painter. He was a contemporary of Rubens, who sent many sitters to him. Although of the school of Rubens, Vos developed an individual style of portraiture in which cool grays predominate. His representations of children were particularly successful. An example of his many portraits is that of Abraham Grapheus (Antwerp). His brother, Paulus de Vos, c.1596?C1678, was an excellent painter of animals and hunting scenes. His paintings show the influence of his brother-in-law, Frans Snyders. Nikolaus Knupfer
(1609 - 1655) was a Dutch Golden Age painter. Knepfer was trained in Leipzig, where according to Houbraken he was apprenticed to Emanuel Nysen. He then moved to Magdeburg where he found work making brushes for artists. He stayed there until 1630, and then moved to Utrecht to work with Abraham Bloemaert. He lived with him for two years and then established his own studio in Utrecht, where in 1637 he became a visiting member of the Guild of St. Luke. He worked on the decorations of the castle Kronborg in Denemarken, and painted figures in the landscapes of Jan Both and Jan Baptist Weenix. Knepfer was a successful teacher, whose students were great painters after him, such as Jan Steen, Gabriel Metsu, Ary de Vois, and Pieter Crijnse Volmarijn.

b Moscow, 25 Sept 1830; d St Petersburg, 15 Sept 1866,Russian painter. He completed his studies at the Academy of Arts in St Petersburg in 1855. The influence of Karl Bryullov was central to Flavitsky work. He combined the theatricality of academicism and the elegance of salon painting with a desire to observe a degree of realism in his subjects and to relate history to present events, thereby anticipating new developments in Russian history painting.
